Elbow Pain

The elbow joint is the bending mechanism between the upper and lower arm. Many of the large muscles controlling the wrist and finger functions originate from the elbow. Overuse and the complexity of control functions used during movement means injuries are common.

Your Chiropractor will take an in-depth case history. This will include questions on the exact location of the pain, causes, types of pain, exacerbating and relieving factors, referral of pain and family history. Usually there is a history of gradual onset of intermittent pain.

A full physical examination will be made involving: postural observation, spine (neck) and elbow joint palpation, soft tissue assessment, orthopaedic and neurological tests. X-rays may be taken if deemed necessary.

Once the problem is identified your Chiropractor will work with you to reduce the inflammation by advising rest, use of ice packs and/or a form of compression (like a brace or elasticated bandage). Once the inflammation has subsided and the area is less painful, your Chiropractor will start treatment to rehabilitate the area of concern using adjustments and mobilisation to your neck, shoulder and elbow joint and home stretches and strengthening exercises will be given to help with soft tissue rehabilitation.

It is important to be patient with your care as it can take weeks and sometimes months of treatment to improve and correct. Continuity of care and attending your appointments is very important as the treatments work on retraining and strengthening the muscles and ligaments that support the joints – put simply, each visit builds on the one before.
